What is Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy?
Many people go through emotional or psychological difficulties at some point in their lives and sometimes these difficulties persist or feel hard to speak about. Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy offers a space to explore these experiences and offers a way of thinking more deeply about emotional life, including aspects that may not be fully available to everyday awareness.
In regular sessions, the person is encouraged to speak freely – about thoughts, feelings, memories, dreams, or anything that comes to mind. Together, therapist and patient pay attention to what arises, including things that may be hard to express or even to think about.
Psychoanalytic psychotherapy does not aim for quick solutions or fixed goals. Instead, issues from the past, or problematic feelings, thoughts or behaviours can begin to be explored and understood through the relationship with the therapist. This takes time.
Psychoanalytic psychotherapy involves regular sessions of at least once a week, and many people find that attending at a more intensive frequency of two, three or more sessions per week provides continuity and allows a different kind of depth. The number of sessions is something to be discussed with the therapist and may shift over time, depending on what feels possible and helpful.
